Université Côte d'Azur, in partnership with the City of Cannes and the production company Banijay, is launching a new degree program: "Creation and Development of Audiovisual Formats". This unique program in France, run by the "Arts and Humanities" Graduate School, aims to teach students to develop new and original television formats.

Since 2020, Université Côte d'Azur, the City of Cannes and Banijay have been organizing a three-week intensive content writing residency entitled "Content Creatives Incubator" designed to attract talented students and teach them how to design audiovisual programs. In light of its success, the partners are strengthening their collaboration and introducing the university degree program "Mastering the TV formats of tomorrow: creation and development" at the Georges Méliès Campus in Cannes la Bocca.

This one-of-a-kind program in France, run by the "Arts and Humanities" Graduate School of Université Côte d’Azur, aims to teach French and international students to develop new and original television formats. It was more particularly designed to meet talent shortages identified by professionals in the sector.

A bilingual program with an international dimension

The one-year bilingual program with an international outreach will include academic courses (creativity, project management, marketing, legal skills, etc.) taught by Université Côte d'Azur professors and practical courses (knowledge of the global audiovisual market and formats, how to respond to a creative brief, pitching skills, trailer production, etc.), supervised by Banijay professionals. Throughout the year, the program designed to develop the creativity and skills of students will combine masterclasses, themed workshops and periods of immersion in the flagship events of Cannes (MIPCOM, MIPTV, CANNESERIES).

In partnership with the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration, the students will benefit from the technical equipment available on the Georges Méliès Campus for the production of pilots or trailers. They will have everything they need for designing, developing and marketing streaming programs to broadcasters.

For this first year, the master's level university degree will run from January to June 2023 and will be open to 15 students. In future years, it will be held from October to June. This highly professional hybrid training program will be open to students who already have a first-year master’s degree in the cultural and creative industries or professional experience in creativity or production of formats. Candidates will also have to demonstrate that they have completed the relevant internships or personal productions, and show aptitude for creativity, project management and writing. They will also need a B1 level of French and a B2 level of English. Applications have been open since October 20, 2022. After review of applications, short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview before the final selection.

Jeanick Brisswalter, President of Université Côte d'Azur:
"This unique master’s degree in France confirms the innovative role in content creation of Université Côte d'Azur, through its Georges Méliès campus in Cannes. The program was designed in response to the needs of companies in the audiovisual sector, and primarily Banijay. The course content is innovative because it is multidisciplinary and complementary, combining disciplines that are rarely studied in the same program, such as marketing and screenwriting. The international scope of the program confirms the strategic position of Université Côte d'Azur, both regionally and internationally, in the field of creation.

David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes and President of the Cannes Lérins Agglomeration:
“The Georges Méliès Campus is a key element of our strategy to develop the creative industries in the Cannes area. Today, to strengthen our offering in higher education, we are launching with Banijay, a leading global group in the production and distribution of streaming programs, a unique training program in France dedicated to the design of original audiovisual formats and the production of trailers and pilots. The Georges Méliès Campus is the ideal place for this program. It has the facilities and technical equipment needed to produce programs and is also home to different companies in the sector. This collaboration is perfectly in line with our determination to transform Cannes into the city where tomorrow's creators are at home, where new content emerges and project leaders find support.”

Marco Bassetti, CEO of Banijay: "Our position as a leader in global production and our desire to innovate have strengthened our resolve to set up this unique partnership. It is crucial for Banijay to keep its eye open for new trends as it innovates and creates. We are convinced that we will be able to identify talented individuals who will be able to bring new, motivating and inspiring ideas to our 120 subsidiaries around the world.
