The European Commission announced on July 3 that the Ulysseus European University Alliance, of which Université Côte d'Azur is a member, was selected to receive a grant extension of 12.8 million euros for another four years. The award is designed to strengthen the alliance, which now includes eight member universities, and step up its development.

In this new phase, Ulysseus actions will focus on helping to solve societal challenges, while placing a strong emphasis on inclusion, multilingualism and multicuralism in education, research and innovation.

With eight partner universities from different European countries: University of Seville (Spain), University of Genoa (Italy), Université Côte d'Azur (France), Technical University of Košice (Slovakia), MCI | The Entrepreneurial School® (Austria), Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences (Finland), University of Münster (Germany) and University of Montenegro (Montenegro), the alliance reflects the different European regions and types of higher education institutions.

This diversity is what makes the alliance dynamic, flexible and capable of developing agile and sustainable innovation ecosystems in collaboration with 158 associated partners.

By encouraging synergies in the key missions of higher education, namely education, research, innovation and service to society, Ulysseus aims to address global, European, regional and local issues, while stimulating regional growth and development.

Ulysseus grew out of the European University Initiative and is now a major player with actions extending beyond Europe's borders. As part of this new phase, the alliance will establish three Ulysseus branches in non-EU countries, and thereby strengthen its commitment to global cooperation. In addition, Ulysseus will continue to develop double and joint academic degrees, and provide new learning opportunities for students.

The Ulysseus Innovation Hubs will play a central role in this new phase. They will boost the co-creation of transdisciplinary academic programs sensitive to current societal challenges and closely linked to research and innovation. The Innovation Hubs will grow to meet European innovation needs in areas of expertise such as:
•    Sustainable energy, transportation and mobility for smart cities (University of Seville).
•    Robotics (University of Genoa).
•    Aging and well-being (Université Côte d'Azur).
•    Digital transformation of industry (Technical University of Košice).
•    Entrepreneurship and impact (MCI | The Entrepreneurial School®).
•    AI applied to business and education (Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences).
•    Socio-environmental sustainability (University of Münster).
•    Cybersecurity (University of Montenegro).

As Ulysseus enters this promising new phase, the alliance is eager to strengthen its role as a European university.

The Ulysseus alliance is determined to play a leading role in experimenting with new legal structures and frameworks that will ultimately transform all European universities.
