From December 5 to 7, Université Côte d'Azur hosted a delegation led by the President of the Universidad de Costa Rica. This meeting followed the visit, in May 2022, of an official delegation from Université Côte d'Azur and IRD to the Universidad de Costa Rica, which led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two universities.

The signing of this agreement was the first step towards a major partnership between the two institutions. It was the logical continuation of previous collaborations with IRD and was fully supported by the Conseil Régional Paca Sud, which had signed a partnership agreement with the State of Costa Rica.

The visit was a further opportunity to share ideas around the main focus of the partnership, namely, socio-environmental challenges and also to discuss collaboration on other strategic issues such as the cultural and creative industries or aging and well-being. The delegation took time to visit IMREDD, the Villa Thuret, and the Georges Méliès Campus where it met different members of the academic community and university partners such as IRD and INRAE.

Cooperation is already underway

In just a few months of partnership, several actions and projects have already been set up together: the "Socio-environmental Challenges" chair at the ODYSSEE Graduate School, the development of a sustainable cocoa production chain, and a visiting professor invited by the ECOSEAS laboratory.

Furthermore, the values and vision shared by the two universities have led to the identification of scientific diplomacy as a strong area of cooperation, both in the face of climate change and to guarantee the freedom of researchers.
