The Winter School on Biology of Ageing, hosted by Université Côte d'Azur (UniCA) from December 11 to December 15, 2023, not only served as a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary learning and research collaboration but also showcased the significant involvement of the Ulysseus Alliance, the LIFE graduate school and the UniCA Franco-Indian Campus in Life Sciences in its organization and management.

This event attracted a diverse group of participants, including students, speakers, and researchers, fostering an environment that facilitated the exploration of cutting-edge concepts in ageing biology. The Winter School, coordinated by Prof. Paula Antunes Pousinha and Prof. Alexandre Ottaviani, witnessed a robust enrollment of 27 students, comprising 18 UniCA Master students, and 9 students from other countries. The event's rich diversity extended to its speakers, with contributions from 32 UniCA researchers spanning five UniCA laboratories (IRCAN, IPMC, iBV, LP2M, C3M, LAMHESS), alongside four invited researchers from renowned institutions such as the University of Paris, University of Cologne, University of Genova (Ulysseus partner), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc, Bangalore, India).

The Winter School program featured morning sessions, both online and in-person, offering thematic conferences by researchers. Afternoon sessions were tailored for students enrolled in the full program, emphasizing team-building activities and the development of soft skills.

A total of 97 participants engaged in the Winter School, with approximately 45 attendees participating in person and an additional 25 to 40 individuals joining online for morning sessions. The overall evaluation of the Winter School scored an impressive 8.5 out of 10 points, reflecting the participants' acknowledgment of the program's innovativeness, interactivity, value in terms of time invested, and educational impact. The Winter School on Biology of Ageing 2023, with the invaluable support of the Ulysseus project the LIFE graduate school and the Franco-Indian Campus, emerged as a resounding success, emphasizing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and skill development in the field of ageing biology. UniCA's commitment to advancing education and research in this critical domain, in conjunction with the Ulysseus partners, was evident in the event's diverse participants, esteemed speakers, and well-received program.

About Ulysseus

Ulysseus is one of the 50 European universities selected by the European Commission to become the universities of the future. Led by the University of Seville, along with seven other European universities (University of Genoa, Italy; Université Côte d'Azur, France; Technical University of Košice, Slovakia; MCI | The Entrepreneurial School®, Austria; Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Finland; University of Münster, Germany; and University of Montenegro, Montenegro), the project enables students, researchers, and graduates to freely move between universities, undertake internships, and initiate high-impact research projects.

About the LIFE and Health Sciences Graduate School

The Life and Health Sciences Graduate School gathers 10 internationally recognized research laboratories and institutes spread over 3 campuses, totaling close to 1,000 researchers. LIFE offers master's and doctoral degrees that strongly integrate an academic education with research either in a laboratory or in a company. It funds a yearly international winter school that gathers scientists and students with the best international invited speakers in the field.

About the Franco-Indian Campus in Life Sciences

The Franco-Indian Campus of UniCA, funded by the French government, gathers four main partners: Université Côte d'Azur, Ashoka University, IISc and IIITD, in Delhi, Nice Sophia Antipolis and Bangalore. Its aim is to foster students and staff exchanges, scientific collaborations, and the building of international programmes in life and health sciences with a strong focus on (i) the digital transformation of life and medical sciences and (ii) therapeutic innovation.
