[UNOC] Meeting between Université Côte d'Azur and Canadian delegation Oceantech

On June 10, 2025, Université Côte d'Azur had the pleasure of welcoming a high-level Canadian delegation to the UNOC (United Nations Ocean Conference), for a morning of exchanges focused on innovation and international cooperation in the sustainable use of the oceans.

Held at the Espace Vernassa on the Saint Jean d'Angély campus, the event brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, institutional representatives and experts from Canada and the Université Côte d'Azur.Université Côte d'Azur, with the aim of fostering new synergies between the Canadian and Côte d'Azur ocean technology ecosystems.

After a welcome by Cécile Sabourault, Vice-President of International Development and Europe in charge of UNOC3, words of welcome from President Jeanick Brisswalter and Vice-President of Social and Environmental Transitions Erwin Franquet set the tone: to make international collaboration a powerful lever for responsible innovation.
The intervention of His Excellency Ambassador Stéphane Dion, alongside the Consul and the representative of the City of Nice, Xavier Latour, reiterated the diplomatic and strategic importance of these meetings in the global context of ocean-related challenges.

The presentations that followed provided an opportunity to learn more about the Canadian and French approaches. Kendra MacDonald, General Manager of Canada's Oceans Supercluster, presented a rich overview of Canada's oceans technology ecosystem.anic ecosystem, before Laurent Counillon, Vice-President Research and Innovation, highlighted the innovative dynamics of Université Côte d'Azur.



A number of local initiatives were presented, illustrating the diversity of projects carried out in the region: educational innovation and entrepreneurship, promotion of marine research, support for technology start-ups, etc. Speakers included :

Three thematic sessions then enabled participants to discover projects led by Canadian and French companies innovating in key areas: marine ecosystem conservation, pollution reduction and climate adaptation, and the development of an inclusive and innovative ocean economy. The quality of the discussions, led by Thierry Weissenburger of the Canadian Embassy and the Université Côte d'Azur team, highlighted the real potential for cooperation, both in science and industry.

This high point is fully in line with the momentum generated by Université Côte d'Azur and its IdEx, which is working to strengthen structuring international partnerships around major global issues. The mutual interest shown during this morning's event points to promising collaborations for future joint research, technology transfer and training projects.
