Nobel 2025
Université Côte d'Azur extends its warmest congratulations to Peter Howitt, Philippe Aghion and Joel Mokyr, winners of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel 2025. This prestigious award recognizes their work, which has profoundly renewed our understanding of the mechanisms of innovation-driven economic growth.
Groundbreaking work on growth and innovation
The research of Philippe Aghion (Collège de France, London School of Economics) and Peter Howitt (Brown University) is in line with endogenous growth models.
Drawing on Joseph Schumpeter's concept of "creative destruction", they have shown how innovation - the engine of growth - can also be a source of economic transformation and even upheaval.Their work analyzes the conditions that foster a sustained innovation dynamic: the role of competition, the formation of rents, incentives to innovate and public policies that encourage fundamental research. Today, their contribution is central to understanding the links between innovation, productivity and sustainable growth.
For his part, Joel Mokyr (Northwestern University) highlighted the cultural and historical dimension of economic creativity, emphasizing the importance of values, beliefs and the transmission of knowledge in the innovation process.
Close links with Université Côte d'Azur
The work of Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt has had a direct influence on research carried out within theGREDEG laboratory(UMR Université Côte d'Azur / CNRS), particularly in the fields of innovation economics, growth and multi-agent macroeconomics.
Over the years, these scientific links have taken concrete form through collaborations, participation in thesis juries, seminars and scientific events organized by the university.
Université Côte d'Azur was honored to award Peter Howitt the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in 2022, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to economic research and his close ties with our scientific community.
A shared pride
This international distinction not only recognizes an exceptional intellectual career, but also underscores the Université Côte d'Azur's place in a world-class scientific network, open to major contemporary economic debates.
