Université Côte d'Azur, a research-intensive university open to the world and committed to academic freedom and solidarity, is mobilizing to offer American researchers the conditions they need to pursue their scientific work.

Recent decisions by the North American administration concerning science in general, and numerous research programs on climate, health or inclusion in particular, are posing intolerable threats to many US-based scientists. Not only is funding being cut off, but entire agencies are being closed, and many people are being laid off or their jobs threatened, with methods of unprecedented violence.

In response to these decisions, Université Côte d'Azur is taking the following measures:

  • Offer opportunities to scientists within the framework of the thematic priorities already identified within the establishment, in order to ensure that scientists who are prevented from working here benefit from our site dynamics.
  • Strengthen our existing partnerships with American universities, including by waiving the rule of parity in co-financing, particularly in the areas of climate change, environmental risks, the arts and social sciences.
  • Set up mechanisms to enable these scientists to work and benefit from their academic freedom in a secure environment.
  • Support French and European researchers in their efforts to return to their home countries.

Specific support measures put in place

In concrete terms, Université Côte d'Azur will combine the resources available at national level with local capacities to support research of excellence, such as the Initiative d'excellence and the 3IA Côte d'Azur 2030 Cluster.

  • Creation of a dedicated program within the Initiative d'Excellence's Advanced Research Program, enabling scientists and artists to be hosted for a period of 6 to 24 months (2 to 4).
  • Coloration of international chairs in the 3IA Côte d'Azur 2030 Cluster (2)
  • Creation of Université Côte d'Azur's Institute of Advanced Studies to host contract scientists with a start-up package (2 to 4)
  • Host/stabilize existing collaborations and accommodate scientists who need it (up to 8)
  • For young researchers, open a dedicated pathway within the Programme d'Excellence Jeunes Chercheurs (Young Researchers Excellence Program) for 2-year renewable funding as part of integration into a site team (2)
