With a view to hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in the French Alps in 2030 and in Salt Lake City (Utah) in 2034, Université Côte d'Azur, through its Initiative d'Excellence, and the University of Utah have set up a mirror research program.

Four research projects have been selected to support the sustainability and inclusiveness of the Olympic Games.

The projects, co-financed by the two universities from a dedicated seed fund, are as follows:
  • Air Quality at Winter Sport Venues: Impact on the health of athletes and spectators
  • Winter Olympics Skiing Health & ACL Injury Prevention & Evaluation (SHAPE) Initiative
  • Sports Nutrition and Olympic Wellness (SNOW): Immuno-Metabolic and Environmental Risk Assessment
  • Environmental Management for Mitigating Emissions through More effective Allocation of water (EMMA)

International Hackathon on water resources: a success for Polytech Nice Sophia students

As part of a drive to foster links between the two universities, and in the context of the Olympic Games project, five 5th-year engineering students at Polytech Nice Sophia were selected to take part in a local Hackathon on water resources. selected following a local Hackathon to compete in an international Hackathon on the theme of water resources organized by the Wilkes Center for Climate Science & Policy at the University of Utah.

Prior to their participation in the University of Utah Hackathon, the five Polytech Nice Sophia students had won the Grand Prix du Jury, the Prix des Coaches and the Prix Coup de Coeur at the Hackathon organized by Polytech Nice Sophia on the theme of oceans in October 2024.

Divided into different teams, they had the opportunity to work with students from the University of Utah on innovative and concrete solutions. The 80 Hackathon participants also benefited from the support of Isabelle La Jeunesse, coordinator of the Chaire Partenariale "L'Eau dans les Territoires des Alpes-Maritimes" at theInstitut Méditerranéen du Risque, de l'Environnement et du Développement Durable (IMREDD), who was on hand to support them in their thinking and answer their questions.
We had a perfect trip, both on the French and American sides. It was an extremely enriching experience. Personally, what I remember is that, as future French engineers, we have every chance of success, and there are plenty of opportunities for us to collaborate with American engineers on a wide range of subjects, particularly in the creation of start-ups," says one of the students from Polytech Nice Sophia.
Congratulations to all the students for their participation, and especially to a student from Polytech Nice Sophia who, with his team, won the Public Prize and 2nd place in the Hackathon (Jury Prize)!
