This month we focus on digraphs, a key concept in mathematics! But what exactly are digraphs?

What is a digraph?

A digraph, or directed graph, is a mathematical structure that represents relationships between objects, with directed connections. Unlike conventional graphs, where relationships are reciprocal, in a digraph every edge has a direction, meaning that a connection between two nodes has a precise meaning. For example, in a social network like Instagram, one user may follow another, but the reverse is not necessarily true, making it a digraph.

Digraph theory plays a central role in the study of social networks and complex systems in research carried out at the Inria center at Université Côte d'Azur and at the Laboratoire d'Informatique, Signaux et Systèmes in Sophia-Antipolis. The ANR DIGRAPHS project focuses on optimizing the analysis of these directed networks, with applications in fields as varied as logistics, communication systems and artificial intelligence. By improving our understanding of digraphs, this research opens up new perspectives for better managing and analyzing modern networks.
