On June 6, during the Jazz à Valrose festival, Université Côte d’Azur awarded British guitarist and composer John McLaughlin an honorary doctorate at the Valrose campus. This prestigious honor recognizes his exceptional career and major contribution to the history of jazz and improvised music.

On Saturday, June 6, at the Valrose campus, Jeanick Brisswalter, President of Université Côte d’Azur, awarded an honorary doctorate to John McLaughlin, a leading figure in contemporary jazz. Awarded to foreign figures for their exceptional contributions to science, literature, or the arts, this distinction is among the most prestigious awarded by French universities.

John McLaughlin, a pioneer of modern jazz and fusion music

A virtuoso guitarist and composer, John McLaughlin has established himself since the late 1960s as one of the most influential artists on the international scene. Having made his name alongside Miles Davis, he played a key role in the emergence of electric jazz before founding the Mahavishnu Orchestra, an iconic group that redefined the standards of virtuosity and musical composition. With the group Shakti, he initiated a groundbreaking dialogue between jazz and Indian music, anchoring his work in a deeply intercultural approach.

A prolific composer and dedicated educator, he has left a lasting mark on several generations of musicians and remains an essential reference point. His influence extends far beyond jazz, inspiring many major artists on the international scene.

Already honored by the Berklee College of Music and the recipient of numerous awards, including Grammy Awards, John McLaughlin embodies artistic excellence combined with a constant quest for innovation.

One of the wonderful aspects of music is that it defies words. Although I have been a musician for most of my life, it took me years before I took the time to reflect on what music really is. Today I know; it is the only language that all of humanity speaks and understands. Excerpt from John McLaughlin’s DHC acceptance speech.

Université Côte d’Azur: A Strong Commitment to the Arts and Creativity

By conferring this title, Université Côte d’Azur affirms its commitment to fostering dialogue between artistic creation, research, and innovation. This distinction is fully aligned with the institution’s mission—recognized as an Initiative of Excellence—which promotes an integrated approach to knowledge at the intersection of the sciences, humanities, and arts.

Through its cultural ecosystem—including notably the Villa Arson, the Rosella Hightower School, and its partnerships with the Nice Conservatory—the university is developing an ambitious policy in the areas of artistic education and research. The awarding of this honorary doctorate is thus a significant gesture, both a recognition of an exceptional career and an affirmation of the central role of creativity in the institution’s academic and cultural mission.
