This charter, which has been widely endorsed by the university’s constituent bodies, sets forth the guidelines adopted by Université Côte d'Azur regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) tools in teaching and learning. It was adopted by a vote of the university’s Academic Council on January 29, 2026.
Background to the Development of the “Artificial Intelligence, Teaching, and Learning” Charter
The drafting of this document was initiated by the Vice President for Educational Transformation and Lifelong Learning as part of the work of the “Artificial Intelligence, Teaching, and Learning” working group, for which it was one of the deliverables. It was motivated by the need for faculty members to understand the institution’s position on the use of AI tools, in a context where students are using them extensively—even during exams—at the risk of having such use deemed fraudulent.
As this charter complements the Manifesto —which sets forth an institutional policy adopted by Université Côte d’Azur in December 2025—it is subordinate to it.
Objective of the charter
In its preamble, the text clearly states its objective: to define “the principles of a reasonable, equitable, and environmentally sustainable use of generative artificial intelligence within the framework of teaching practices at Université Côte d’Azur.” It is addressed to all students, faculty, and staff involved in teaching and learning (educational engineers, training engineers, etc.) »
The fundamental principles of the charter
It is based on four fundamental principles: curiosity, transparency, precaution, and parsimony, and consists of two parts:
General principles (for example: “Generative AI tools cannot replace critical analysis and personal reflection on the part of the student”),
The responsibilities of students and faculty using IAg tools.
This charter, soon to be presented to the academic network, will be incorporated into the IT charter and signed by each student upon administrative registration.
It is already available in the “Pédagog’IA” faculty area (in the top banner of Moodle).
