DELEGATION COP28

The University's participation is fully in line with one of its societal commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals, to disseminate science, act as an expert and promote an ambitious vision of scientific diplomacy.

As an observer organization to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) since 2021, Université Côte d'Azur is committed to supporting member states in the decision-making process, providing scientific input and supporting global transformation through education and innovation. Université Côte d'Azur aims to be a proactive player, providing solutions.

Live from COP28

With this third participation, Université Côte d'Azur continues its efforts to :
  • share its expertise and academic knowledge,
  • defend a common vision with international networks, notably U7+, of the role that higher education and research establishments should play in multilateral dialogue,
  • engage in dialogue with other stakeholders, including international organizations and national authorities, in order to make proposals.

Université Côte d'Azur's contribution to COP 28

With a delegation of 5 representatives, the University is taking part in COP28, to be held in the United Arab Emirates from November 30 to December 12, 2023. It is contributing to several official UNFCCC events with the U7+ Alliance, RUS, Second Nature, to name but a few university networks.
In addition, Université Côte d'Azur is associated with the Science for Climate Action Pavilion hosted by the MERI Foundation, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the United Nations World Meteorological Organization, alongside the Centre Scientifique de Monaco. In this context, University representatives are taking part in various panels covering topics such as:
  • health and climate change
  • the role of higher education and research in the decision-making process,
  • the ocean and climate action,
  • transforming education to empower young people.

All these panels can be viewed live or recorded. In addition to the Science Pavilion, Université Côte d'Azur will be taking part in other panels, including one organized under the aegis of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change on the role of higher education institutions in the decarbonization of territories.

Mirror events on our campuses

In parallel with its participation in COP 28, the University is organizing local events this year, enabling students and the entire university community to get involved. This initiative was notably based on a Call for Ideas to gather the expectations of our students. Events included
  • awareness-raising and change management workshops on campus
  • workshops for schoolchildren
  • film-debates aimed particularly at the general public
  • live connections from the COP, sometimes to decipher the negotiations, sometimes to explain the general workings or the role of young people in the exchanges.

Actions taken by Université Côte d'Azur since its participation in COP27

Since its participation in COP27, the University has undertaken several actions at different levels:

  • Working on the notion of an exemplary and responsible Campus. To this end, the university is preparing to sign the Grenoble Accord and to apply for the DD&RS label. In addition, the eco-responsible mission has stepped up its activities and is increasingly present on all campuses.
  • Organizing and hosting the annual summer school of the DG2 network (a network of excellence for university leaders in governance and management) on the theme Universities: making a commitment in the face of climate change. The school brought together the management and governance teams of DG2 members for a full week of practical work, sharing experiences and case studies.
  • Pursue our commitment to international networks, in particular our contribution to exchanges within the Network of Networks, our participation in the dedicated U7+ working group, and the social responsibility initiatives supported by Ulysseus.
  • Organize exchanges with schoolchildren and students.
  • Pursue academic advocacy initiatives with the wider community.
  • Support the actions undertaken by its components, in particular the Observatoire de la Transition Écologique et Citoyenne Côte d'Azur and the creation of a chair on socio-environmental challenges with the University of Costa Rica, supported by our ODYSSEE University Research School.
  • Responding to THE Impact ranking , which aims to assess the impact of universities through the prism of the Sustainable Development Goals.
