One of the most prestigious honors in the scientific world: Éric Gilson and Frédéric Cappa have officially been elected to the French Academy of Sciences. This recognition highlights the excellence of their work and the global impact of the research conducted at Université Côte d’Azur.
On June 2, 2026, under the dome of the Institut de France in Paris, Éric Gilson and Frédéric Cappa were officially inducted into the Academy of Sciences. This solemn ceremony marks the culmination of their remarkable scientific careers and recognizes their major contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields.
Eric Gilson Mathieu Baumer
A university professor and hospital practitioner at the Université Côte d’Azur and the Nice University Hospital (CHU), and team leader at the Nice Institute for Research on Cancer and Aging (IRCAN – Université Côte d’Azur/CNRS/Inserm), Éric Gilson is a recognized specialist in the molecular mechanisms of aging. His work focuses in particular on the role of telomeres in genome stability and cellular homeostasis. It has shed light on the organization of telomeric chromatin and provided a better understanding of how its alteration can lead to cellular senescence and promote oncogenesis.
A professor at Université Côte d’Azur (University School of Research in Fundamental Sciences and Engineering) and a researcher at the GEOAZUR laboratory (Université Côte d’Azur/CNRS/IRD/Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur), Frédéric Cappa explores the mechanical behavior of deep-seated rocks. From Nice to California, his career as a researcher has led him to study invisible yet essential parts of our planet. His research focuses on the role of fluids in rock mechanics and on the physical processes behind earthquakes, contributing to a better understanding of geophysical phenomena and natural hazards.
This dual induction into the Academy of Sciences highlights the quality of the research conducted in the institution’s laboratories and underscores Université Côte d’Azur’s ability to produce leading-edge scientific advances in fields critical to society.
