Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, a brand-new degree will open its doors: the DIU "Communication, Médias et Cancer" ("Communication, Media and Cancer") run by Université Côte d'Azur, in collaboration with several French universities (Sorbonne Paris Nord, Clermont Auvergne, Montpellier and Lyon 1).

Training at the crossroads of health and information sciences

Cancer is both a medical reality and a major media issue. Communicating effectively about the disease is an essential challenge, whether in the care-patient relationship, in the transmission of research results or in information aimed at the general public.

The DIU Communication, Médias et Cancer (Communication, Media and Cancer) meets this need by bringing together two complementary worlds:
  • healthcare professionals (doctors, pharmacists, nurses, physiotherapists, interns, etc.) wishing to improve their communication skills with patients and their families,
  • professionals and students in journalism and information science who want to enhance their scientific knowledge and understand the medical and human issues surrounding cancer, in order to better inform the public in the age of social networks and mass media.

An innovative, multidisciplinary program

The program alternates theoretical instruction with practical experience:

  • Conceptual foundations : communication, cognitive biases, epidemiology and patient pathways.
  • Prevention, diagnosis, prognosis: announcement, communication in palliative care, awareness and screening, legal aspects.
  • Therapeutics and clinical research: the role of the communicating physician, scientific communication and popularization.
  • Genetics and information : oncogenetics, legal impacts, representations of cancer in the media and art.
  • Patient care and interprofessionality : AI, medical platforms, patient autonomy, the role of caregivers.
  • Practical workshops: audiovisual mediatraining, fact-checking, web writing and digital communication.

The course takes place both face-to-face and remotely, with highlights including a visit to the Georges Méliès Campus in Cannes in April.

A diploma with high added value

For doctors and healthcare professionals, the DIU is a way of validating continuing medical education and acquiring concrete tools for improving patient relations.
For journalists and communicators, it's a unique opportunity to deepen their medical knowledge and better decipher the challenges of oncology, in order to produce reliable, relevant and accessible information.

Registrations open until October 15, 2025

This DIU is aimed at students in initial training and continuing education trainees.
The courses will take place over the course of 2025-2026, with sessions divided between theoretical courses, practical workshops and case studies.
