A Public Administrative Establishment (EPA) since 1988, the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur will become a "Public Scientific, Cultural and Professional Establishment" (EPSCP) as of November 7, 2023.

This legal transformation, primarily motivated by the desire to bring the establishment's statutes into line with its scientific missions and activities, also reflects recognition of its national and international influence. The recent decree also reaffirms the Observatory's contribution, as a component institution, to the definition of the Université Côte d'Azur's strategy in the field of Earth and Universe Sciences.

Alongside the Observatoire de Paris and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur is one of three public establishments dedicated to the Earth and Universe Sciences.Universe which, along with the 25 observatories for the Sciences of the Universe spread across the country, play an active role in the national structure coordinated by the Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers (INSU) of the CNRS.

The recognition of the Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur as a "grand établissement" is testimony to the results of the structuring work carried out on the Côte d'Azur site by the Université Côte d'Azur, in conjunction with research organizations. This desire for transformation is in line with the goal of better integration within the experimental public establishment Université Côte d'Azur, of which it is a component establishment, and of taking into account its specific missions. The transformation of Université Côte d'Azur into a grand établissement in 2024 is part of this process, which will stabilize OCA's position as a grand établissement EPSCP within Université Côte d'Azur.Jeanick Brisswalter, President of Université Côte d'Azur
