Researchers from Géoazur and the French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority have assessed the seismic potential of the Ligurian Fault, off the coast of the French-Italian Riviera. Their work, published in March 2026 in Nature Communications Earth Environment, highlights the vulnerability of a densely populated area that is highly exposed to seismic and tsunami risks.
By combining seismological, geodetic, and geological data, researchers at Geoazur (Université Côte d'Azur, CNRS, OCA, IRD), in collaboration with the French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority, have demonstrated that the Ligurian Fault, off the coast of the French-Italian Riviera, is capable of generating strong earthquakes, similar to the one in 1887.
These findings, published in *Nature Communications Earth & Environment*, provide a better characterization of a densely populated area and highlight the need to adapt seismic risk assessment methods, particularly in intraplate regions.
